From November 8th to 18th, the first edition of HUB Montréal will showcase to an international audience the talent, know-how, and dynamism of the city’s leading-edge companies and creators from the cultural and creative industries (CCI) in an immersive and experiential environment. HUB Montréal is part of the official programming for Montréal’s 375th anniversary, and is presented by Lune Rouge, a visionary new company founded by Guy Laliberté, whose mission is to promote creativity and use it as a driver to stimulate entrepreneurial innovation. Over 11 days the event will focus on the creators and leaders who are transforming Montréal into a globally recognized hub of talent and expertise in video games, virtual and 360 augmented reality, digital arts, sound and special effects, music, film, culinary art, experiential marketing, branding and multimedia.
Part of HUB Montréal’s programming includes numerous partner events, each respected gatherings in their respective ecosystems, such as: M for Montréal, Mundial Montréal, Montreal Virtual Reality Market, Montreal Doc Circuit, JAMx360 from RPM, Relevent, MTLàTable, Jam Nation and MEGA (Montreal Expo Gaming Arcade).
“This convergence of events and major professional markets will generate a new world-class event offering from Montréal,” says Michel Leblanc, co-spokesperson and President and CEO of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montréal. “In addition, this prestigious event will strengthen Montréal’s status as a creative city and finally, it will contribute to its global reach and make it a hub for business tourism.”
“HUB Montréal is an experiential springboard for Montréal’s cultural and creative milieu,” explains the comedian, author, musician and event co-spokeswoman Laurence Dauphinais. “It is an opportunity for artists to be recognized as researchers, and pillars in the R & D of creative industries. ”
This singular gathering of business people, entrepreneurs, artists, researchers and creators, as well as the general public will come to life at the Society for Arts and Technology, the National Monument, the Peace Park, the Phi Center, the Montréal Casino, Lune Rouge, the Ellephant Gallery, and the Cinémathèque québécoise and House of Regions. HUB Montréal is divided into two parts.
HUB PRO, the event’s industry component, amplified by AUDIOKINÉTIC, will offer participants a unique opportunity to develop business relationships and discover collaborators from different milieus. More specifically, CCI professionals, international buyers and influencers, renowned and emerging experts will be on hand November 13th, 14th and 15th.
The event will be a new showcase for these industries and fertile ground for understanding the possibilities they provide for experiential, immersive and interactive experiences – and of what is and will be the next big thing, as well as meeting players who are fully engaged in innovation. So for those looking for new ideas and ways of doing, those who build brands, cities, products, and services, HUB PRO is tailor made for you. In short, if you are looking to reinvent ways of being connected with your audiences and in particular to fully grasp all the new avenues and possibilities that digital provides, then HUB PRO is where you need to be.
HUB PRO will consist of speakers, collaborative labs, “game changers” showcases, pitch sessions, corporate presentations and emerging concepts as well as multi-sector networking activities ranging from multimedia to visual effects, music, digital arts and large-scale artistic events.
Speakers and guests attending HUB PRO include Jake Zim, Vice President, Virtual Reality Content at Sony Pictures Entertainment; Kim Leigh Pontin, Creative Director of Sky VR; Nikolaus Roche Kresse, Director and Producer at Ubisoft France; and Gianmaria Serra, CEO of Balich Worldwide Shows, Italy. Participating companies Rodeo FX, Compagnia Finzi Pasca, Moment Factory, FLOAT4, Framestore and Audiokinetic and others will exhibit their most ambitious projects.
In addition, on November 14th and 15th, the Multimedia Producers Association will present JAMX360, a hackathon in collaboration with M for Montréal. For this occasion, four Montréal digital production studios (Dpt, Folklore, Ingrid Ingrid and Turbulent) will team up with artists and musical groups (Afrotronix, Julien Sagot, Ragers and We are Wolves) to conceive and design interactive concert prototypes.
The HUB PRO passport, valid for the three HUB PRO days (Nov. 13-15) and all other activities affiliated with HUB PRO or HUB FEST from November 8th to 18th, is available for only $600 + taxes. That’s a savings of $375 this year thanks to the exceptional support of Montréal 375th. It gives you access to all HUB PRO activities and is even transferable between colleagues or collaborators. In addition, companies who purchase two or more full-rate passports will be offered any following passes (up to ten) at half price. Moreover, from today until October 19th only, an additional 25% will be discounted on the HUB PRO passport, available for $450 + taxes only.
The other component of HUB Montréal is HUB FEST. Presented by the Montréal Casino, HUB FEST is a vast celebration geared towards the general public. In fact, we are expecting between 5,000 to 10,000 participants. Some of the exciting elements that make up its programming include: video game performances, prototype unveilings, external mapping projections, virtual reality experiments, electronic gaming competitions open to all, and the North American English premiere of the play Siri. Note: Not to be missed is the evening “M.W.A. (Montréal With Attitude)” a special event in collaboration with M for Montréal at the Cabaret du Casino on Friday, November 17th, with a “Hip Hub” event sure to be memorable and the headline return to Montreal of DEL THE FUNKY HOMOSAPIEN (and yes, the little cousin of ICE CUBE) not seen in Montreal for a decade.
“We are very pleased to present HUB FEST, whose activities fit perfectly with our positioning which combines games and entertainment. In addition, we are proud to build more and stronger links with the creators here to showcase Quebec talent,” says Marc Laporte, General Manager of the Montréal Casino.
Many HUB FEST activities are free and open to all, including, a virtual reality park with the unique activity “Your VR in my RV” at Peace Place (corner of St-Laurent and René Lévesque) from November 11th to 15th, while others are very affordably priced.
All programming details for both HUB FEST and HUB PRO can be found on the new HUB Montréal website, beautifully designed by the AKFN team at: www.hubmontreal.com.
