Montreal Pow Wow
May 6 & 7, 2017 - Aréna Denis Savard (Auditorium de Verdun)
The Montréal Pow Wow is a traditional Native pow wow that takes place in the city every spring. Montréal, or Tio'tia: ke, as the local Kanien'kehá: ka (Mohawk) community calls it, is now home to people from many First Nations. The Montréal Pow Wow provides the urban Native community with a place to come together to celebrate life, right in the heart of the city.
The 2017 edition of the Montréal Pow Wow is a special opportunity to build bridges between Native and non-Native people. This inclusive event aims to honour, promote and celebrate Native cultures through music, singing, dance, crafts, food and more.
The Montréal Pow Wow team invites Montrealers and Montrealers at heart to turn out in large numbers for this important event for the Montréal Native community.
In 2014, Al Harrington of The Red Urban Project joined forces with members of the Native Friendship Centre of Montreal. The city hadn’t seen a pow wow for many years, other than the annual pow wow at McGill University’s First People's House, held every fall.
Ever since the Native Friendship Centre’s first spring pow wow in 2014, the Montréal Pow Wow has enjoyed ever-growing success. In 2015, a one-day pow wow was held at Beurling Academy in Verdun. In 2016, the Pow Wow Committee organized a weekend-long pow wow at Vanier College in conjunction with the Vanier Indigenous Circle.
The Pow Wow continues to grow in popularity, drawing Natives and non-Natives from here and elsewhere, and the Committee looks forward to many years of celebrations ahead!
