Another Brick in The Wall - The Opera
March 11th to March 27th 2017 - Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier at Place des arts
For Montréal’s 375th anniversary, the Opéra de Montréal presents the world premiere of Another Brick In The Wall – The Opera, based on the legendary work The Wall, by Roger Waters.

This blockbuster production brings together eight soloists onstage, including celebrated Québec baritone Étienne Dupuis as well as 48 choral singers and 70 musicians. Three extraordinary artists have contributed to the creation of this opera: Julien Bilodeau has composed the new musical version of Pink Floyd’s cult classic, Dominic Champagne will direct this 80s musical epic and Alain Trudel will conduct the Orchestre Métropolitain.

Creating this opera for a Montréal stage is particularly significant because Roger Waters first came up with the idea for the project following a concert at Montréal’s Olympic Stadium in 1977. First a concept album (1979), then a film (1982), The Wall is a psychological drama inspired by his life.

The work showcases Pink, the central character, whose alienation and isolation epitomize the disillusionment of his generation. Following the death of this father during the Second World War and the continued abuse from his teachers and his mother, Pink isolates himself from the world around him. The dissolution of his marriage is the last brick in the metaphorical wall that he has built around him. Will Pink succeed in tearing down the wall he has constructed, if his very survival depends on it? These emotions will all be explored in the total art form that is the opera.

The Opera de Montréal invites us to experience an unforgettable musical event in celebration of Montréal’s 375th anniversary.
